Assumptions
"English class sucks." That is the phrase you will hear all the time in my school. This is because three years ago, when I started high school, we had a horrible English teacher. He was rude, he was mean, he was a hypocrite, he was strict. Now, we have a new English teacher. He was an excellent teacher, and was very popular at his old school. At his old school, many people, teachers and students alike, loved him. He was funny, he was laid-back, and he was the kind of guy that you would never see with a frown on his face. I say was, because ever since he got here, he has been grumpy and aggressive.
Why? Well, on the first day here, he walked into class late. There was crushed chalk all over the floor, desks, and new books. People were shooting spitballs and writing in books. Several people were talking openly about their sex lives and their gang lives. He sat down in his desk. Surprise! He sat on a half-eaten granola bar. He good-naturedly says "Quiet, everyone!" All he gets are a few spitballs for his trouble. "Quiet!" A couple of students start yelling insults at him. By the time the class is over, the previously spotless class is disgusting, and the previously joyful teacher is angry and annoyed. As he walks outside, he sees the custodian ready outside the door. The class ending up destroyed was obviously a regular occurrence. He walks away, the custodian giving him a sympathetic look.
The reason why the pupils were acting so badly? They had a horrible experience with the previous teacher, so they assumed that this teacher would be just as bad! They didn't even stop and see if this teacher would be O.K.! Even worse, these are 12th graders! They aren't 7 year olds! This is widespread. And it doesn't just happen in English, it happens in PE, Math, Music, French, Spanish, Science, Geography, History, practically every subject there is! So I'm asking you today, NOT to assume, because just because you've had a bad teacher in the past, it doesn't mean the subject is bad!
